lets try it again
As some of you know, I’ve posted details about our club on a local social networking site. If any of you know of any such sites and would like our club posted there, let me know. The more the merrier. We have gotten a pretty strong response and our group will be considerably larger than our first meeting. I’m really excited about that, let me tell you. Having said that, please visit the events page to learn of what Zaneta has chosen for us. RSVP as soon as possible. Since the group is larger, she will definitely need to contact the restaurant for seating arrangements.
I’ll see you soon,
L.
say it ain’t so
As you all know by now, February event has been cancelled. (Feel better, zee). Since we’re all nice people, we will allow Zaneta a chance to hostess again in March. Our event will take place the 4th Saturday of the month. I will keep you posted as I am apprised of the plans. I do hope to see each and every one of you.

february 24
Ladies, I do apologize for the delay in getting our movie of the month out to you. It would appear that February is NOT the most exciting month for new releases. Our original selection for this week, Black Snake Moan, will not be released this weekend as originally scheduled. I believe that the studio realized that they really needed to put some more money into actually marketing this movie. As a result, this will be coming out the following weekend which, unless a future hostess chooses this, puts this out of the running for one of our movies of the month. Having said that…I. AM. EXTREMELY. EXCITED. about our hostess Zaneta’s final selection. Seriously. I have heard so many remarkable things about this selection, which has been coiined “An adult fairy tale”. This movie, that many haven’t even heard of has garnered SIX academy award nomination which is EXTRAORDINARY for a foreign language film. I do hope that you will join us on the incredible adventure that is PAN’S LABRYINTH. Details are included in our events section. I look forward to seeing you all this weekend and I definitely look forward to sharing this amazing film with you.
Until then,
L
…has it been a month already?
Hello!
You know, as I was discussing with this month’s hostess some options for our movie selection this month, I started thinking about my motivation for starting this group. First and foremost I LOVE MOVIES. Its that simple. I find it amazing to think that someone’s imagination and creativity can come to fruition in such a way. I DREAM of the day that I can get my thoughts together and just create that way. So when it comes to watching movies, I find that I’m a bit of a whore in my selection process. Pretty much anything goes. I’m not saying that I love all movies, but I can say that I’m pretty much open to trying as many out as I can. That’s why Sunday mornings often find me at the theatre trying to catch up on everything that I’ve missed. This movie club was created so that we could experience as much as we can together. I know that most have their favorite genre: If I had to choose, I’d choose indie flicks as a favorite. Maybe you’re into romantic comedies, or horror movies. Regardless of what your favorite is, my hopes are that we will be open minded enough to share in the choices of everyone else. This month’s selection, Black Snake Moan, is a gritty film given to us by the same folks who brought us Hustle and Flow. Its not one of the blockbuster, glossy, mainstream movies. It might be good. It might not be. I do know that I’ve seen the trailer and if nothing else its going to be INTERESTING. Movies like will definitely keep the conversation going at our dinner after. I do hope that you all will join us this month. I’m definitely looking forward to the experience. I hope you are as well.
Until then,
L.
new process
We have the email addresses of everyone who is interested so far in joining our group. ( If you know someone else who may be interested, please have them email movieclub07@aol.com so we can make sure to put them on the contact list). From now on, we will send out event reminders from this email address. RSVP to the email address and be sure to include your phone number so that we can contact you with any last minute changes. Upon receipt of your RSVP, you’ll receive password for the events page which will contain details about our evening. It is imperative that you RSVP as the password will change. This will help us to regulate the size of the groups attending and to make it easier for the hostess to stay organized.
We’ll be in touch soon with information on February’s events.
Our first evening together…..
Our first event went by without a hitch. Well almost. Only if you don’t count an early morning call by she who shall not be named, proclaiming frantically that the movie was sold out. Only if you don’t count my not having everyone’s contact info and panicking because I couldn’t get in touch with the hostess. Luckily everything came together and we were able to meet as planned. The theatre selected was very nice, but parking was a nightmare! Most of us had to circle the lotS at least three times only for the privilige of having to take a pretty long hike to the theatre. All in all, it was a very pleasant evening though. Our hostess Mona did a great job of organizing and getting everyone together. She even went the extra mile and surprised us all with gift bags.
She definitely set the bar high for our next hostess.
The actual movie elicited some very different responses. I’ve asked the ladies who attended to add their reviews to our movie review page as the reactions were quite different. This is because while the subject matter was interesting, many of us questioned the execution. The movie takes place in 2027 in Great Britain. The world has deteriorated into a desolate, grim receptacle of violence, poverty and depair. Terrorist groups have essentially taken over and the country has become a police state. The sense of hopelessness is further fueled by an unexplained rise in infertility: people just stopped having babies. The actions of the movie in fact were set off by the death of the youngest person in the world, an 18 year old boy. From the moment of his death, the movie sort of took off running and unfortunately never looked back. The hero of the story, played remarkably and morosely by Clive Owen, is as unlikely as they come. He is disheveled, depressed, and a drunk with bad feet. So as not to give away any spoilers, all I will say is that he is reawakened when he learns that there IS hope in the form of a young pregnant girl who needs his assistance to make it safely to a group that is trying to make change, that is trying to guarantee hope for tomorrow. Adding to drama, the country has also taken an extreme stance against immigrants to the country. All immigrants were tagged as illegals, and set up in refugee camps throughout the cities, making their homes in whatever abandoned shelter they could find. Its a long, violent, at times confusing journey. We are taking through many different emotions throughout the film, the journey is difficult to watch. Unfortunately, after many highs and lows ( and an unexplained herd of sheep traipsing through through the city streets) we are rewarded with an abrupt ending. Its as though we were carried through an extremely arduous journey only to be dropped off at an unknown destination with no direction and certainly no answers.

Dinner itself was lovely as we all seemed to get along well. Even our waiter got in on the movie discussion! We have chosen our next two hostesses for February and March so check out the hostess boards to see whats coming up.
Final Plans
Saturday is fast approaching! Movie times are finally available, so please check out the events page to view the exact movie time. There are also some driving directions for those who are not familiar with the area. See you soon!
Children of Men
Okay it looks like Mona M has finished her planning for our first outing. The selection, Children of Men has gotten rave reviews already. Its being touted as the “BladeRunner of the 21st Century”. I have no idea what that means since I don’t know what BladeRunner of the 20th century even means, but since lots of critics are saying that, I’m assuming its a good thing. If nothing else, I’m a huge fan of Clive Owen so anything he’s in pretty much is worth viewing. Check out the events page for more details and please be sure to RSVP!! Mona is going to need a head count to make reservations. Now I know a lot of you will be a little skeptical about the theater selection, but remember, we are doing this to try something new. Mona assures me that this theater is only ten minutes away from Tysons. Trust me, I’m timing the trip! For any of you who don’t want to make the drive, if you want to metro into VA or drive at least to Tysons, I’ll be happy to meet you and we can ride in together. Send me an email at movieclub07@aol.com if you want to arrange that. I can’t wait to see/meet you guys.
…and so we begin
Welcome to Dinner and a Movie, the official blog for our self proclaimed “book club” for movie lovers. I’m really looking forward to getting this thing off the ground as soon as possible. The response so far has definitely been encouraging. It seems there are a lot of folks out there interested in the same basic concept: meeting fun, new friends while doing what we all love anyway- watching movies and enjoying a fine meal! It seems so simple, I can’t wait to see whether or not we can actually pull it off. I’ve been tossing this idea around for a while, but recently a few friends figured that now is the time to give it a shot. So here we are.
For those of you who got our first evite, you already know how we hope to do this: Each month a host/hostess will be selected to choose a movie(or play or whatever they feel the group might be interested in). This person is also responsible for choosing a restaurant or cafe for us to visit following our main event. Here we’ll get a chance to enjoy a few drinks,a fine meal, and (hopefully) stimulating conversation. After the event, we’ll post about the event here, on our own personal blog. We’ll post pictures, and our own review of sorts of the movie as well as the restaurants.
We have already received the responses for the first event. We wanted to keep it small initally so that we can all throw in our ideas as to how to improve our little endeavor. If you don’t receive your follow up invitation, don’t worry. You’ll definitely be included for our next together.
